Two-Minute Warning (1976)
An amazing film that was so profoundly disturbing in its original release that the studio spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to re shoot and edit the film into a banal "diversion from the big robbery film" --- A strong meditation on the nature of life in the modern era. Cassaveettes is great ( as always) as the narrative character who is weary of those murderers and psycho's who seek to destroy in a society that teaches "there is no such thing as 'evil'" - Charlton Heston in his first role as a cop gruffly plays the "peace officer" in a world at war. Unique among the films of the era-TWO MINUTE WARNING capitalizes on its star power ( Heston, Gena Rowlands anf husband Cassavettes, "Quincy" era Jack Klugman, Beau Bridges, Walter Pidgeon) by showing us tragedy from the VICTIM's perspective. They neither know nor could predict the tragic turn of events that befall them. Post 9/11 we must be on gaurd for those who would destroy innocent American lives in pursuit of terrorizing our nation. This film was nominated for an Academy Award in the 'Best Editing' category and yet that is it's sole dated element, the long 70's era shots that modern cinema dispenses with in seconds unfold here in a way "two lane blacktop' than Two Minute warning---That having been said- the suspense and pathos more than compensate---also be on the look out for a cameo appearance by the GREAT Anthony Davis (who crushed Notre Dame's vaunted football team in College Footballs GREATEST comeback victory for U.S.C EVER!- in the very L.A.Colliseum where Two Minute Warning is set)
