Prediction Wrong!: Del Rio Does Not Replace Carroll
ELVISNIXON.com went on record on 9 January predicting that Jack Del Rio was to replace the indefatigable Pete Carroll at the helm of the USC Trojans football program. We were wrong.
As of yesterday we felt quite good about our chances, as the Oregon State Coach, Mike Riley, was induced to stick around the rainy state for another three years. Commenter "Jack F" made an excellent argument on Riley's behalf (see Comments section for last post for all of the excellent remarks)
Del Rio, with his Superbowl ring, NFL head coaching tenure, Trojan family lineage and similar Carroll-esque traits seemed like the ideal fit. As of noon today the Los Angeles Times is reporting that he has been heard to remark that he is staying in Jacksonville.
This means that we are back to square one.
Who shall it be? "Chris F" argues convincingly that Boise State's Chris Petersen is the man for the job. Certainly Petersen's record on the blue turf is remarkable. The problem is his lack of NFL head coaching cache' and the difficulty of getting him to relocate to Los Angeles from the fast paced life in beautiful Idaho.
Pete Carroll could have gone out as the John Wooden of College football and yet he chose to leave the premier coaching gig in American. The question is why? Much has been made about purported NCAA violations by commenter "Johnny 'Aitch" but ELVISNIXON thinks that the angle overlooked by the media has been the shabby way that living legend Bobby Bowden was treated by Florida State. Perhaps Carroll saw the writing on the wall.
That leaves us with an open field of potential candidates. Why not "Super Trojan" Ed Orgeron who was head coach of Ole Miss and currently with Lane Kiffin at Tennessee? Former 49 and Lions coach Steve Mariucci? What about old "Mush Mouth" Lou Holtz? Beano Cook? "Chuckie" Gruden?

I had my doubts that Del Rio would become the next HC @ SC, and so he will not as per ESPN...
Some matter of resigning and missing out on $15M came into play it seems. Perhaps he will be relieved of his duties by the JAXJAGS, and then he can assume the helm at his alma mater.
Now what? The choices are thinning out, and SC may not find a top-flight HC wanting to take on a program that could be severly hampered by NCAA violations yet to be leveed for misdeeds by Bush, McKnight and the pain-killer addiction of a dismissed Asst Coach.

The issue now becomes why are these coaches turning down SC. You will be hard pressed to find anyone willing to step into a situation that may indeed involve sanctions by the NCAA and potential probation. Remember when Tom Crean took over basketball at Indiana and had to deal with all the sanctions and later was heard saying if he new he would not have taken the job. Mariucci, you could do worse. Boise State coach will not leave, too nice a lifestyle. This is not good guys, hate to say it, but something stinks. Thanks Reggie for opening this can of worms.

Give it to Chow at this point (given the unavailable candidates). We saw what Chow did with SC talent, that was the most prolific and exciting offense in the history of the school. Chow is great with college kids and has a long term proven track record of developing the best college QB's. This will keep all the offensive recruits, for example the #1 receiver in the country was supposed to start classes at SC on Monday and flew home waiting to hear what kind of offense SC is going to run. Be the Texas Tech of the west. Try to keep Ken Norton or bring in a strong defensive coach to compliment Chow. He will accept the head coaching job and see it as a challenge. Trust me this will be a more elaborate and unpredictable offense than anything Carroll had since Chows departure.

I am down to:
-Chow WITH a strong defensive head coach
-John Gruden
-Urban Meyer (already resigned from Florida)
-Mike Leach
-Ted Tolner
-Marv Goux

I just heard the news on Kiffin being hired and I must say great job SC. WIth the crew he brings along with him and the addition of Norm Chow to work with Barkley, this is really good guys, congratulations.

Lane & Monte Kiffin, Ed Orgeron and Mr. Chow. A formitable foursome to be sure, but what of KN Jr? I see him feeling that the Rooney Rule was not observed by Tommy Trojan and moving over to his alma mater @ Univ Cambodia, Los Angeles. Joining forces with RN would be interesting, but alas thy will always be second fiddle in La-La when it comes to the sideline cuties, co-eds and the pigskin. Bold prediction: LK causes more unrest and SC is ultimately hit with the DP, ala SMU.

Looks like all the predictions were wrong. Lane Kiffin. Whoda thunk it. The best part of this hire by SC is not Kiffin, but the assistants he brings with him. Ed Orgeron, the best recruiter in the country and a firey leader. Monte Kiffin, Pete Carrol's tutor and former defensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Bucneers and the Great Norm Chow, he greatest quarterback coach in the history of college football. We need our old offensive line coach Tim Davis back to make the " Dream Team" complete.
